There are very few spots on earth quite like Tokyo. As one of the largest and most diverse cities on the planet, there are literally limitless things to do here, or, if you wish, you can simply do nothing at all. It is said that Tokyo is a continuous sensory overload, and it can be if you don’t approach your vacation here with some kind of plan. But at the same time, there is something to be said for simply diving into one of the most overwhelming sights you will ever see: downtown Tokyo at night. With splendid food, top class accommodations and millions of things to do, Tokyo is a dream vacation for each and every person living today, no matter what you enjoy!
If there is a knock against Tokyo as a vacation destination it is the fact that it is one of the most expensive cities on Earth. If you live in North America, there really isn’t anything to compare it to. Even Manhattan in the middle of busy season pales in comparison when it comes to the cost of basic amenities such as food and a place to sleep. But leave it to the Japanese to remain ever vigilant, there are hotels here that are nothing more than a simple bunk that you would find on a rock band’s tour bus. And along with the thousands of high end restaurants here, there are a thousand more affordable cheap eats, too. And best of all, if you do have all of the money you could ever want to spend on vacation, that doesn’t’ mean that you shouldn’t try some of these cheap options. To get a real sense of what Tokyo has to offer, you have to experience both sides of the coin.
Perhaps no city on earth combines the respect and adulation for the ancient and antique with the yearning for modern, flashy and new. If you come from the US, you simply can’t wrap your head around the ages of some of the history here. Even if you come from Boston, New York or Philadelphia, it is difficult to comprehend standing next to a 2,000 year old building, next to a modern sky scraper, a sushi house and a McDonalds. There is definitely some culture shock to get over here, but it is a warm and fuzzy kind of culture shock, if something like that exists. As a new tourist to Tokyo, you never feel out of sorts here, unless you are battling jet lag. The lights, music and sounds that fill this city around the clock beckon those who aren’t familiar with it to explore, to learn and to live. With apologies to other world capitals, no other city is more plugged in, more cutting edge and more hip than Tokyo. Even if you are trying to experience its grandeur on a budget, and it isn’t recommended, it can still be an experience that will change your life forever.
